Mission KL: Mandarina arrives in Malaysia

Mandarina Duck shop in Kuala LumpurKuala Lumpur, “KL” to friends, has just welcomed a Mandarina Duck store.
It’s hosted in the Pavilion, a mall in the heart of this electrified, multi-ethnic capital city of Malaysia, which is both rooted in traditions and looking to the future.
Traveling on the monorail makes you feel as if it’s the year 2050. The mix of mirrors, ultra-modern architecture and deco or colonial buildings makes the city look like any western metropolis, except for the frangipane flowers, tamaka and palm trees that line the streets.
Nature is a fully recognized citizen of this city. The tropical forest and KL are inseparable.

Petronas Towers - Kuala LumpurThe Petronas Towers are the symbol of the city. You’ve probably seen them in the adventure scenes of Entrapment  with Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The 452-meter towers are very imposing and are now the second tallest building in the world. The ride up is free but you’ll have to line up at 8 am, if you want to get one of the 500 tickets that are available daily. For experts in meditation only!

Shopping tour: take your time.
Time Square - Kuala LumpurIn the Central Market, you can buy traditional items in pewter or silver, colorful batiks and songket silk clothing. Or you can try the Golden Triangle, which has many malls. Next, try the Imbi Plaza for DVDs and hi-tech novelties that would be new to even the most hardcore nerds. Then, it’s off to the 4th floor of Time Square for a ride on the Supersonic Odyssey!

Petaling Street - Chinatown - Kuala LumpurDon’t miss Petaling Street, aka Chinatown, a multicolored road that is teeming with people at all hours, lined with shops and full of insistent street vendors. And after a killer shopping day, you can refresh your feet for less than 5 euros with either a foot reflexology session or a cocktail with a foot soak in which little fish feed off of your dead skin cells.

The Seri Angkasa restaurant offers an unforgettable sushi and continental buffet dinner, brought to customers by a conveyor belt, for 30 euros. This is expensive by Malaysian standards but worth it for the breathtaking view of Bukit Nanas Forest Recreational Park, where you can go jogging in the tropical forest.

If you have time and are interested, there are many religious buildings to see, including Hindu temples, Chinese pagodas and mosques. Did you know that there are four New Year’s Eves in Malaysia?

I suppose I still have time to plan for New Year’s Eve 2009!
