Mandarina Duck Cell Phone: the woman-oriented phone

Hello? So, did you hear rumors on the web about the launching of a brand new Mandarina Duck cell phone?
Well, guess what, it hasn’t been launched yet!
That was until yesterday. Its official presentation to the press took place yesterday at Shu Uemura, a temple dedicated to women’s cosmetics. This choice of location highlights the feminine aspect of the new phone.

Mandarina Duk cell phoneRing, Ring, Ring. I dare any woman to find her phone in her bag within the first ten rings. Despite the fact that bags have an inner pocket especially for cell phones, they always end up lost in the mess at the bottom the bag.
Well, thanks to a funky clip on the Mandarina Duck cell phone, it’s easy to use and can be hooked directly onto a bag.

The brand new Mandarina Duck cell phone collection comes in three feminine colors: cherry red, lilac and lime green.

My favorite color is cherry red. What’s yours?

Made in collaboration with Alcatel Cellular Phones, the Mandarina Duck Cell Phone will be on sale in Italy starting in December 2007.

Update:

Reading your comments, I understand that most of you had some problem with the Mandarina Duck Mobile. I call Alcatel to ask how you can solve it, here the answer:
“Dear customers,

we apologise for the difficulties you found in using the mobile phone, even if we always try our best to make userfriendlyness the key point for our products.
As the memory of the mobile phone is quite small and suitable for only 1 song, we strongly suggest you to buy a MICRO SD card, a simple, very small memory card available in all electronics equipment shops (from 128 MB up to 1GB - 1 GB memoy card allows to store about 120 songs - ) that you can insert in the slot available on your phone (see instructions for details).
Then, you need to connect your mobile phone to a PC through the USB cable you will find in the packaging; the PC need to first register the mobile phone as a “new device”, so connect the mobile phone to the PC to allow the PC recognize the mobile phone; as you will connect the cable to PC and mobile phone, 4 options will appear on mobile display. You will need to chose the first one, called “mass storage”. Wait for the PC to find the new device and recognize it, then disconnect the two items. Then pls connect them together again, always chosing “mass storage” as option on mobile phone.
Go into your PC, find the MP3 file of a song you would like to upload on the phone and click on it with right key and select “send to..”. The PC will be able to recognise the mobile phone as a memory device (like a USB key), so it will call it “removable disk”. Chose this option and the PC will copy the song on the MICRO SD card.
Repeat this operation with all the songs you would like to insert paying attention to maximum memory capacity.
To see the results of these operations, disconnect the mobile phone from the PC, go into the “media album” of your mobile, chose the option “memory card” and you will find the files you copied on the mobile phone. To play a song, simply select it and chose “play” from “options” of the “media album” or go to the music player, chose “update songs” and then select “all songs”, find the song you would like to play, select “play” and have fun!
Do not hesitate to contact us for further clarifications and thanks again for purchasing Mandarina Duck Mobile Pack”.

I would like to express my great disappoinment in Mandarina’s Ducks handling of my damaged product. Not only did the Wallet I purchased in Rome break but so did my handbag. When i purchased the products I was informed that if there were any problems i could take it into any store internationaly and I would be looked after. Mt wallet has been repaired 3 times, I have to ask what kind of product are you creating. I would like the products replaced or a new product. I have been abusied by your staff and yelled at> i must say I am disgusted.

  2. Ducky Says:

    Dear Deborah

My wife’s now on her second phone — she likes the phone but the first one died six days after she started using it, with the phone stopping making any sound (ringtones, incoming voice, all sound). Carphone Warehouse have replaced the phone (although if I’d waited till today to buy it, I’d have saved £30). We’ll have to see how long this one lasts.

  4. Jackie Hewitt Says:

we have just bought one of these phones for our daughter for christmas.it doesn’t matter how hard we try we cannot put any music onto the phone. the instructions in the booklet are vague and the staff at carphone warehous where we went for help were less than helpful and even less informed. help please - we have a disappointed teenager wanting to use the MP3 on her new phone!

  5. Julie Spencer Says:

I got my phone for Christmas and I am having the same problem as Jackie. I have downloaded the software from http://www.mobile.mandarinaduck.com/ which I only found from searching around the web myself, as Jackie says the instructions in the booklet are very vague! But The software will not allow me to upload any music until I have registered - to register I need a pin number - what pin number?! A have tried putting in every number that appears on the packaging that come with the phone and none of them are correct! When I asked the staff in The Carphoneware House about it they looked like they had even less clue than me and just said “contact the manufacturer” Contact them where? I can’t find any contact details! Please can someone help!

  6. Ducky Says:

    Dear all,
I’m really sorry for the problem you had with our phone, so I ask Alcatel to help us.
You can read the replace in the post.
    Thanks for the patience.

  7. Julie Spencer Says:

Thanks Ducky and Alcatel for your replies, I’ll get the memory card and let you know how I get on. Many thanks
    Julie

  8. Caz Forber Says:

    Hi,

Firstly I’d just like to say that I love my new mandarina duck phone. However, my problem is that it differs from my last phone in that it does not remind me that I have received a message or call by bleeping, and so I have to keep checking it myself. Is there a setting on the phone that can change this?

  9. ricky Says:

I find the instructionson how to use the phone not very explicit. It took me 2 hours to find out how to change the type. I have yet to find out how to make my directory of numbers. I can get either name or number but not both together. Is there a booklet with clear instructions please. I am getting on in years but I can understand how to do most things when instructions are written clearly. Please help. Thanks

  10. Ducky Says:

Caz Forber*:Hi Caz, if you leave the mobile phone on “normal” setting for what it concerns sounds ( menu–>my settings–>ringtones–>mode), you can hear a sound for incoming message or call. Pls also adjust volume ( menu–>my settings–>ringtones–>volume) and message beep ( menu–>my settings–>ringtones–>message beep), if needed.
Also, if mobile is closed while receiving a message or call, you could see the icon of an envelop or the name of the person calling appear on outside display.
If you missed a message or call, you can just open the phone and read a message on display that says “missed call” or “new incoming message”.
It is not possible to have reminder of incoming messages not read yet every half an hour, for instance.
But…the phone is so nice that it is not really a trouble to check it too often… ;-)

Ricky*: Dear Ricky I’m sorry that you find difficult to use the phone and related user manual. If troubles, you can dial the hot line number related to your country that you can find on blue lealfet inside packaging.
In any case, saving a number into directory is quite easy, you just need to dial the number on display, press “save”, chose if you want to save it into directory of phone or into SIM card and then press “edit” to combine name and number together.
    Best regards

  11. ricky Says:

Thanks for your reply, it’s easy when you know how isn’t it.

  12. Flora Says:

i have carefully floowed the instructions, both in the booklet and on this page, and interpreted them in every way possible, but somehow, i still cannot play music on my (admittedly gorgeous) phone. i have got as far as getting the file onto my micro SD card. Then i go to media album > memory card > the file ive put on there > options…. (so far so good) but the only things that are listed are :send, download new, delete, rename, sort, copy to phone, move to phone, delete all, create folder, memory card. none of these options seem to work, and when i go to music > update songs it says that there is no music in the folder. am i missing something really obvious, or is there a fault? thanks!

  13. caitlin Says:

Hello me and my mum are having problems with the mp3 player too. i got the phone with my xmas money and want to play music. i have got the memory card and have followed the instructions. i sent a song to my phone and i can find it on my phone in memory card but there is no option to play (just send, download new, delete, rename, sort, copy to phone, move to phone, delete all ,create folder memory card). Can you please let me know what to do next thanx Caitlin

  15. B Says:

I have bought a MD phone about a month ago. Since day one he’s been acting strangly. Every time somebody calls me, my phone automaticaly ignores the call so that the person has to call me back. This is very annoying, especially for a new phone…

  16. Doreen Bradshaw Says:

I have been trying to download my pictures from my new duk phone but am unable to do so, every time I try it says there is no connection. Also I have followed the instructions from this web site to turn up the sound but can’t find the volume in menu- my settings- ringtones- volume. I don’t know where to go from here, so would appreciate any help from you.

  17. katrina Says:

I have just brought the mandarina mobile. Its great the only problem is when i try to download anything from the internet from the mobile ie games wallpappers it says the device is not known. Is there any way i can download i have to admit i am a bit of an addict to playing games on my mobile.

  18. Ducky Says:

*Flora: Dear Flora, the first option you find when you go into media album> memory card>files> should be “PLAY” and not “SEND” , that is the third one, pls check once again. If you cannot find it, pls indicate us your country, as there might be a little problem with the software inside your phone that we could solve.
    *caitlin :

*Dee:You can downolad the PC suite (the software to be installed into PCs and laptops) from www.mobile.mandarinaduck.com clicking on the downolad area

*B: Sorry but I don’t understand your promblems… Can you better explain what happens?

*Doreen Bradshaw:Dear Doreen, you can download pictures from the mobile to the PC through the USB cable and the PC suite. You can find USB cable into packaging, while you can download the PC suite from the website www.mobile.mandarinaduck.com in the download area. Once the PC suite has been installed and the mobile has been connected, to PC with the cable, you can easily downolad pictures. Do not hesitate to contact us if you encounter any problem. Otherwise, you can buy separetely a micro SD card (our phone supports micro SD cards till 1 GB) and save them there; if you then want to see them on PC, just use the micro SD card with its adaptor to insert it into your PC (PLS CHECK BEFORE IF YOUR PC HAS THE SLOT FOR SD CARDS, otherwise there will be no way to insert the SD card into PC).

Volume: menu>my settings>ringtones>go to the volume” page” scrolling to the right through the right key of the navigation key. Volume “page” is the third page; you can adjust it going up or down with the navigation keys “up” and “down”.

*katrina: Dear Katrina, if it is the mobile that says that it does not recognise the device, this means the mobile does not support some features of the game or of the wallpaper. If it is the provider of the game giving this message, it means that it does recognise Mandarina Duck as one of the compatible handsets for which the game or the wallpapers has been created. In this case, however, you can try allthesame to download the game and see if it works, as the game providers might not be able to write a complete list of all the compatible handsets and so, some of them are not recognised, but could however support the game. Pls let us know if it works.

    Best regards! :-)

  19. katrina Says:

I downloaded a game as was suggested i got charged for the game but i had a message saying content not available for my device so i was £5 down on credit and no game.

like others here I cannot load any mp3s onto the phone. I tried the software download for pc but it crashed my dads computer. I have connected it to his macbook and it can access the folders on the phone but I cannot copy anything onto it, I get error messages..”The operation cannot be completed because one or more required items cannot be found. error code-1401″ Why make a phone that is not compatible with macs?!

  28. Jill Botherway Says:

I’ve just bought your phone from Carphone warehouse, and am pleased with it, but they were unable to explain how to use the two accessories in the box with the phone, i.e. the little ball and the clip. I don’t understand how to attach either to the phone, or how to use them. A diagram would be useful!!

  29. G Says:

If you take the back off (where the battery goes) there is a small hook at the top. You hook the string that the ball is attached to, over this hook, then clip the back on to secure it. I also cannot figure out how to use the clip.

  30. Steve Says:

  38. SJ Walsall Says:

I purchased a Cherry Red Mandarina Duck last week from the Carphone Warehouse Walsall.
I am using it with an Integral 1 Gigabyte Transflash Card and its working fine.
I have added music on by two routes one card reader (having formatted the card as it came off another phone to make sure the phone created the folders on the card, I dragged and dropped the files using my PC to the relevant music folder and photographs where required). The other route is via bluetooth (these are cheap to buy these day) and as well as music I used bluetooth to send in a java game which installed immediately and works great). I have not tried the phone with Apple Computers but i cannot see that it should not as if you connect the phone to the mac via the usb cable (supplied with the phone as part of the charger) with luck the phone should show all folders and you drag and drop the same. Bluetooth may also allow access to the phone for dropping files in maybe even automatically once paired.
The phone is loud, easy to use, display is clear and colourful and is a welcome improvement over previous Alcatel phones which tended to be somewhat basic.
The phone cost me just short of £20 for the phone plus £10 top up on t-mobile and the phone is totally unlocked, sim free and un modified by any network.
Also it will work with an orange 3G sim (of course it does not support 3G for Internet or video calling as it works with the basic orange part of the sim and it has caused no harm whatsoever).
Overall a very good bargain basement phone (you wont get a similar spec in any brand for the price ).

My wife has one of these but she would like to be able to turn off the annoying sound it makes every time she sends a text message. Is there a way of turning off that sound. It makes sense to have a sound when a message is received but not so when one is sent

    Thanks.

I’m considering buying the Duck phone, and I was wondering - given that it doubles as a music player, can you plug standard earphones into it? I don’t want to subject strangers to my music! :)

No Faye thats not possible, but if your lucky you’ll find a set of earphones in the box with the phone.
the connection is not the standard plug but a small usb plug.

  98. Autumn Says:

    Hi!

I have mandarina duck cell phone and the problem that bothers me is the following: The phone can’t decode cyrillic written sms. So, when somebody from my friends send me sms written in Russian, I can’t see it - instead I see squares.

I already asked in the shop where I have bought it, but they adviced me to search a cyrillic decoding programme on the internet. Was not really helpful. And I still haven’t found anything.

Does anyone know how to solve this?

    Thanks

  99. suzerne Says:

Hello, I have downloaded a ringtone onto my computer and followed your instructions re. putting it onto my phone but although I did connect the phone by usb then disconnect then re-do it and my computer told me it had found the device, when I tried to load it by ’send to’ it just tells me to ‘please insert a disc into drive K’ (which is the port where I plugged the usb in). Is this the worst phone in the world? I love the looks but am constantly thinking of changing it as nothing is easy to operate on it.

I have had a green MD phone for the last two years and have never had a problem with it. I use it as an alarm clock every morning, I find the ringtones loud enough and have been able to use my favourite tunes from the MP3 player as ringtones. I find it easy to download music and photos from the pc to phone and vice versa, using either USB cable from charger, or bluetooth. I use the phone as an MP3 player when I go to the gym or on train journeys. All in all, I love it and it has never let me down. It is now looking very much the worse for wear, and I would love to replace it with another MD phone, perhaps in a different colour. I am looking.

Brilliant….and I love the plopping noise. the Alarm has woke me up anywhere in the world in time for my flights home just what you need. Camera not brilliant, but everything is easy to work. An admirer.
