Edmonton, shopping of course!
Last month Mandarina opened a new monobrand store in Edmonton, the capital city of Alberta and Canada’s cultural capital for the year 2007. History and culture play important roles in the arts and lifestyle of this city. You’ll be overwhelmed by all the activity of this year’s “Festival City“. Its extensive cultural and artistic programme will definitely be very interesting but certainly not relaxing.
So, if too much culture stresses you out, then try some shopping therapy at the West Edmonton Mall, where my colleague Andrea got to meet Patrick Swayze! It’s one of the largest shopping and leisure centers in the world. A modern Babylon, where you can shop till you drop amongst 800 stores and more than 100 bars and restaurants.
After hanging out in the coolest mega modern mall, you cannot miss a guided tour of the historical and uncontaminated part of the city, where you can discover Edmonton’s true nature.
After passing through the modern, upscale residential district, the tour flashes back to the early 1900s in a Ukrainian village, where fully functioning antique cars and trains take you back to the atmosphere and lifestyle of the Ukrainian pioneers, who were the first to cultivate the lands of Edmonton.
Along the way, four Louvre-style glass pyramids announce the presence of the Muttart Conservatory, where various world ecosystems have been re-created to host over 700 plant species.
Elk Island National Park is another hidden treasure, where you’re guaranteed to have amazing wilderness experiences. Just 30 km from the bustling, modern city centre, you’re bound to encounter herds of buffalo and deer or beavers building their dams.
