Fashion&Art

November 20th, 2007 - posted by Ducky

Is fashion art? Or art fashion?
If I had the answer to that question, I’d be as famous as Schopenhauer. I could give it a try though. I think I’ll surf through the upcoming exhibitions that examine crossovers of these two areas.

101801 Max MaraAfter Berlin, the successful Max Mara 101801 camelhair coat, a Made- in-Italy icon, has arrived in Japan (could it beat out a kimono competition?). It’s showing at Tokyo’s Mori Art Center Gallery until 25 November. In the 50s, Dior predicted that this coat, taken from menswear, would become a fashion must. Ipse dixit.

London Streets

November 9th, 2007 - posted by Roberto Mineo

The Eye of London is an eye observing street style from above. Fashion rises up from the grassroots and from the people. In London there are no rules and the streets are the source of trends. That’s why I like it so much.

In Covent Garden, you can breathe a timeless atmosphere amongst the street artists and artisans (who aren’t always cheap). It’s a window on new trends and moods. Globalization and globetrotter: ethnic prints, bohemian scarves and platform boots, mixing is the new must. Giles and Marc Jacobs have shown us.

Walking from Oxford Street to Marble Arch, past traditional British chain  stores, you can come across spacewomen in futuristic outfits of Indian colors that seems to be right off of a Manish Arora runway (stylist to whom the Victoria and Albert museum have dedicated a temporary exhibition).

High Heels, mon amour?

September 28th, 2007 - posted by Ducky

High HeelsThe secret of Mona Lisa’s smile has finally been revealed. Women of the world (myself included), how could we have not recognized it after all this time? Da Vinci’s portrait bears the “satisfied” expression of a woman who’s been wearing high-heels for 500 years!

High heels, both a pain and a delight for women, are celebrating their 500th birthday!

Ideas

June 28th, 2007 - posted by Roberto Mineo

These are images from pantone guides; one of the tools we use in our research for creating new products.

These books are full of wonderful shapes, colours and ideas.
It’s up to the designer to be inspired by them and transform them into something innovative and unique!

Tokyo streets

May 17th, 2007 - posted by Roberto Mineo

Hi, you’ve already heard about me from Ducky, but I’d like to tell you something more about my job. I’ll try to explain how projects and ideas take shape and become Mandarina Duck’s products. We’ll talk about trends and about my favorite places for shopping around the world.

Hachiko - Shibuya symbolThere are no city squares in Tokyo. Shibuya, however, is the exception as there is something that resembles a square in front of the railway station. This area is populated by trees and Hachiko. Or rather by a statue of this famous, faithful dog. In my mind, Hachiko has become the symbol of one of the most trendy districts of Tokyo, where it’s rare to find people over the age of 25.

My work has taken me to Tokyo, London and Paris, where I have strolled along the city streets and come to love the spontaneity and informality of Japanese style.
