Lego is 50 years old

December 2nd, 2008 - posted by Ducky

Zip Zap UsbWho doesn’t know about those famous, colorful building blocks?
Lego is turning 50!
Well, I know that time is rushing by but I never realized just how long ago it’s been since I fought (gently, of course) over Lego blocks with my brother.

Lego Tower in WienLego  has broken the Guinness World Record for the tallest building block tower, which has been constructed by children and adults in Vienna. Modern Peter Pans will now have much to dabble in!

Black Autumn: horror or chocolate?

October 23rd, 2008 - posted by Ducky

Chocolate scuplture - Play Chocolate 2008Black as chocolate.
My beloved chocolate is going to be celebrated in many different ways, to the delight of gourmets, during Play Chocolate in Perugia, running until 26 October!
If the traditional tour of the producers’ stands is too risky, perhaps it’s better to train your noses at the “Golonaso” exhibition, where you can have fun with the olfactory tasting of all kinds of chocolate bars. Well, that will be very hard for me as I have a bad cold!

Lively is online!

September 9th, 2008 - posted by Ducky

You’ve never seen me, have you? Well, here am I!
Actually, this is a virtual Ducky that I created on Lively, Google’s new 3D browser!

It’s very easy to use. You just download the software, log on through a Google account and get creative!

I can finally boast about having an avatar, as my experience on Second Life wasn’t very successful. I’ll leave it to my web engineer friends.

Duck Day: when ducks become competitive!

September 4th, 2008 - posted by Ducky

We already know that ducks are very celebrated birds but I’ve discovered that a Duck Day actually exists!
Last Sunday, the Thames looked like a giant bathtub. The only thing missing was the foam!

Two hundred and fifty thousand plastic ducks (a Guinness world record) competed in the Great British Duck Race, a one-km race from Hampton Court Bridge to Albany Reach with spectators on all sides.

Murano, blown bags

February 21st, 2008 - posted by Mrs Valeria

murano_red_bagIf I were to say “Murano“, what would you think of?
You’d probably think of either the island that is world famous for glass blowing or the city of Venice.
It was Mardi Gras a while ago and, as usual, Carnival events in the lagoon were quite distinctive. This year, the theme was Sensation.

At Mandarina Duck, Murano recalls our Fall-Winter 2001 bag collection created by Marcel Wanders.

2037: future documentary

February 6th, 2008 - posted by Ducky

A while ago, a blog reader had asked me about our advertising campaign from 1998 to 1999, which had impressed her very much. The image was of a just-married elderly couple coming out of a church, which had also been used as a store banner.
According to the blog reader, the ad communicated a positive brand image and emphasized people who had worked hard all their lives.

While I was going through the Mandarina Duck archives, I found these images of “2037: a future documentary”.
This campaign ran for three consecutive seasons and its mission was to talk about a not-too-distant future.

Sabrina, Kelly, Birkin: who are they?

February 4th, 2008 - posted by ManuManu

SabrinaBrief, concise and specific, this is requested by a well-informed client that uses naming! A few words and seconds to obtain a desired object, a brand new Gucci bag.
No more alphanumeric codes or ambiguous descriptions but an actual name to identify the product.

Naming is becoming more common in accessory companies that manufacture for both the luxury and the mass markets.
In the current market, it’s no longer good enough to just choose the right trends, colors, shapes and sizes of new products. You need to make up a convincing story about the product in order to have it perceived as unique. This is why accessory companies now need to create something more than just an “eye-catching” bag but rather a product with a “catchy” name.

The travel season has begun: Tank

January 30th, 2008 - posted by Mrs Valeria

Tank travel line - Mandarina DuckUtility” was a revolutionary product for its modern material, its range of colours and the fun and freshness that it injected into a grey market.
Do you remember the Paninari who wore Timberland shoes, Best Company sweaters and a different coloured Mandarina knapsack every day?

The “Tank” travel line was as successful abroad as the “Utility” line was in Italy.
How did it all get started? Once, while travelling in the United States, Paolo and Giorgione bought a black nylon suitcase.
After they got home, Pietro showed it to Piero and they agreed that then was the right moment to create a new and bolder men’s travel line. The colour black was chosen because it was very trendy at that time.

MD20: the five lives of a line

May 31st, 2007 - posted by Roberto Mineo

Mandarina Duck - MD20My job is not only to create new products. I often have to modify the look of a successful line while maintaining its soul, which has become a cult collection.

This is the latest version of MD20. It’s one of our most long-lived collections and the one that has seen the most changes while maintaining its fil rouge: informality, lightness and functionality.

Masculinity and femininity are blended in the history of Italian customs modifying shapes, colors and the objects that fill our life.

Mandarina Duck - la prima MD20The late 80s: MD20 was created to appeal to 20-year olds – hence the number in the brand name. It had a masculine, military style and anodized aluminum accessories. Mandarina Duck became MD, a more decisive sound.

Utility: the birth of an icon

May 10th, 2007 - posted by Mrs Valeria

Today I’m going to tell you about Utility, the backpack that made Mandarina Duck famous.

Mandarina Duck - Utility sketchBack in 1977, after a trade fair in Japan, Paolo and Pietro were even surer that they didn’t want to conform to the fixed ideas regarding fashion accessories at the time. When he talks about those days, Paolo always says ”It was a very depressing market, especially due to the dull colors that everyone was using”.
