Miniaturization. The new hi-tech frontier?

April 16th, 2008 - posted by Massimo Venturini

New technologies are moving towards more compactness.
Miniaturization is the latest trend and ultra-light devices are impossible to find. Take a look at this a MacBook Air that was thrown out because it was buried in wastepaper.

I was about to buy one when I thought that perhaps I’d should reorganize my own desk first.
Ultra-small-mania began last summer, when the MID (Mobile Internet Device) was launched.
It’s based on ultra-slim Atom PC technology and, thanks to WiMAX, is being used worldwide offering people real time connections.

Apple Mac OS 10.5 “Leopard”: an all-in-one solution

January 14th, 2008 - posted by Massimo Venturini

Here I am again to tell you about my latest experiences in the world of hi-tech and information technology.

The new Apple Mac OS 10.5 “Leopard” has just come out and I absolutely had to run to an Apple store to see, try and buy the ultra-flat 24″ screen with an integrated Leopard system.

Luckily, I was in Hong Kong when the new operating system was officially launched, so I rushed to my favourite store in Kowloon to find out all about it.
Have you tried it yet?

Travel advice from Hong Kong

October 22nd, 2007 - posted by Massimo Venturini

I’m often go to Hong Kong for work. Every time I get off from the plane I collide with the charming and both terrific atmosphere of such a contradictory city.

And the contradictions are unlimited. There are amazing landscapes of tropical nature mixed with cement masses rising up to the skyline. You can see clear skies (just after a typhoon) or wait for days for the sun to come out.

When you land in Hong Kong, forget that you are European or American and let the life of this city overwhelm you, along with its hard-and-fast rules, its rhythms, its odors and its people.
Gaseous emissions and gastrointestinal rumblings mix with 7-star restaurants, charming Rolls Royces and Ferraris just delivered from Maranello. When in Rome, do as the Romans do!

Web TV – Shall we throw out the remote control?

September 24th, 2007 - posted by Massimo Venturini

“The Being Digital revolution, the shift from atoms to bits, is irreversible and unstoppable”.

This was a theory that used to sound like science fiction. It was propagated in that period when the RAI reigned over Italian TV and was always quarrelling with the new, private ‘heretic’ channels of Mediaset. When DOS was the most common operating system and Windows was a pioneer regarded with scepticism.

However, the prophecy of Negroponte (a modern Nostradamus) has now come true!

Current TV - an interactive Web TV channel started by Al Gore in 2005 – has just won a very coveted Emmy Award for best “interactive television services”.

The perfect flight

September 17th, 2007 - posted by Massimo Venturini

I’ve just gotten back to work from my summer holiday and I’m already onto my next business trip. This time it’s Singapore.
I’m on my way to the airport, counting how many flights I’ve taken and with how many airlines I’ve flown.

My favourite airline is Lufthansa, as it is very hi-tech and very functional, which is, of course, what you would expect from a German airline. Their latest innovation is the “Private Bed“, thanks to which you can adapt your seat to your every need. I hardly ever take flights that are less than 8 hours long, which means that I have to deal with serious jet lag. As well, when I arrive, I need to be rested, alert and ready for meetings, so I’ve now learnt to sleep on any type of plane. Somehow, I think that this one is something else entirely!

Narita Airport

June 19th, 2007 - posted by Massimo Venturini

L’aeroporto di Narita I often go to Tokyo for work and I usually land at Narita Airport (Shin Tokyo Kokusai Kuko), the largest airport in the “Land of the Rising Sun” and probably the one with the highest number of passengers and greatest movement of goods.

I must say that it’s not the most comfortable airport to land at. Narita is more than 60 km from downtown Tokyo and it’s best to have an expert driver pick you up or take public transportation, which is always on schedule.

An Apple in New York City

May 3rd, 2007 - posted by Massimo Venturini

Good morning readers. My name is Massimo Venturini and I am the Production Manager for MD. My job often takes me around the world, so Rossana has asked me to share some of my experiences with you on Duck Side. Flights tend to be long, so I’ll have time to tell you something about my job and my “discoveries”.

A typical pictureI recently traveled to New York to collect the Travel & Leisure Design Award 2007 for our Y’s collection and to work on an upcoming project, which I can’t tell you about just yet.

The Big Apple has always fascinated me, the melting pot, the surreal atmosphere, the frenetic life (“The city that doesn’t sleep”, as Frank used to sing). I had a marvelous view from my hotel room. We stayed at the Mandarin Hotel (nice coincidence) which is located on top of the Time Warner Center at the southwestern corner of Central Park.
I’m quite fond of technology, especially Macintosh. Whenever I happen to be in New York, I can’t wait to go down 5th Avenue to the corner of Central Park and be swallowed up by the Apple. Read the rest of this entry »
