Duck Day: when ducks become competitive!

September 4th, 2008 - posted by Ducky

We already know that ducks are very celebrated birds but I’ve discovered that a Duck Day actually exists!
Last Sunday, the Thames looked like a giant bathtub. The only thing missing was the foam!

Two hundred and fifty thousand plastic ducks (a Guinness world record) competed in the Great British Duck Race, a one-km race from Hampton Court Bridge to Albany Reach with spectators on all sides.

Superhuman performance: the evolution of textiles

August 28th, 2008 - posted by Ducky

I always tire out easily when I run and now I’ve discovered why. I’m wearing the wrong fabric! I need an aerodynamic suit like Fiona May has!

SuperhumanWell, I could go to Superhuman Performance - at the Textile Museum in Prato - and choose from a variety of high performance, aerodynamic, hydrodynamic and fireproof sports garments that would make even Spiderman envious!

We often buy clothes because we’re dazzled by their shapes or colors while we see their fabrics as secondary. However, fashion is adapting to new lifestyles primarily because of the development of new sportswear fabrics.

Let’s see what new textiles come out of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, which just may become part of the history of fashion!

Backstage at Fall/Winter 08-09: unofficial previews

August 21st, 2008 - posted by Ducky

Amongst the numerous emails waiting for me when I got back was a fantastic surprise. The backstage pictures of the upcoming Mandarina Duck Fall/Winter collection. The shots were “stolen” from the set with a cell phone. Even though the material is “unofficial”, it has captured the positive, ironic and original atmosphere.

Welcome back!

August 18th, 2008 - posted by Ducky

Welcome back everybody!
It feels strange, doesn’t it? I feel completely disassociated. My body is back (and well ensconced at my desk), but my mind is still on a stand-by.

Mandarina Duck - Welcome backAfter my ritual email downloading, the many pressing questions that have accumulated and the new projects starting up, a coffee break is my only relief!
However, being able to have a relaxing chat with someone is an illusion! I already know that it’ll be the usual pandemonium. Pleasant but chaotic. Because in their hurry to tell their holiday stories, everybody will compete with each other to talk and the end result will be a mish-mash of overlapping voices.

Idea: we need to take numbers like at a supermarket and give each person a few minutes to plan their intervention. However, to do that, we’d probably have to get organized a few months in advance. Actually, considering how many people work for Mandarina Duck, we’d have to start in January!

Despite the fact that the material is “unofficial”, we can capture a positive, ironic atmosphere.

Shopping at a click

July 28th, 2008 - posted by Ducky

These days, the window-shopping has become a “mission impossible”.
You have to choose between the tropical climate on the city streets or the Antarctic temperatures in the malls.
There’s no in-between! That’s why online shopping is a real alternative.
And you can do it comfortably from your own home.

By pure luck, I found the Virtuy Mall website.
It’s a virtual shopping centre where everything is in 3-D. I’ve read that it’s the first of its kind in the entire world!
I was so curious that I clicked on the virtual map and entered a few stores. I found a myriad of things, even ultrasound rattraps and fermented papaya! I even found a record player, which is great because I still have some LPs I’d love to listen to!

London Festival of Architecture: Design grows up

July 24th, 2008 - posted by Ducky

In London, you can now have a cup of tea in a sitting room with the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit.

The largest salon in the world has been set up in the courtyard of Somerset House, an 18th-century ducal palace that has become a cultural center.

Books on demand

July 22nd, 2008 - posted by Ducky

While book shopping, have you ever been told, “It’s out of print” or “there are no more copies available”?
Well, don’t panic!

If you can’t find any bestsellers by John Grisham or Ken Follett, you won’t have to check every bookstore in town because you can now get books on demand!

The Espresso Book Machine is coming to Blackwell’s in Oxford soon.
It will print your book in the time it takes you to drink your coffee! Hopefully, this praiseworthy descendant of Gutenberg’s printing press will be coming to Italy soon.
