Advertising Arts: Mona Lisa beats out showgirls
We know that advertising is considered an art.
But art flirting with advertising is really something new.
Advertisers are fed up with the usual famous people. So, they’ve called on some exceptional figures who don’t need any restorations (well, very few!) to be trendy and beautiful.
David Beckham and Naomi Campbell?
In their place, we now see Michelangelo’s David wearing jeans, the Venus de Milo wearing sunglasses and Leonardo’s Mona Lisa with curly hair.
We have to admit it: Greek statues are better looking than football-players and people prefer Mona Lisa to showgirls.
Art versus advertising.
The ancient versus the ultra-modern.
The sacred versus the profane.
Parallel dimensions that encounter each other and create a subtle alchemic mixture.
Paintings coming out of frames and models flirting with marble males are now showing at the “Classico Manifesto” at the Milan Triennale until 24 March 2008. There, the advertising arts are being presented as a means of promoting our classical cultural heritage.
Use of the classical arts in advertising is growing worldwide. Take a look at this online award for graphic manipulation of art masterpieces.
